A softcover book has a flexible printed cover. It is glued straight onto the text block, usually by perfect binding.
That makes it lighter, cheaper to produce and cheaper to ship. It is the standard for novels, guides and manuals, and for anything going out in larger runs or by post.
A paperback can still feel substantial. Flaps, a heavier cover board or soft-touch lamination do most of that work, without moving to a case binding.
