Children's books are built to be handled badly. Thick board pages for the youngest readers, rounded corners, wipeable coatings, generous margins so nothing important sits near a chewed edge.
Picture books usually run to a fixed extent — 24, 32 or 48 pages — because that is what the folding and binding work out to.
Illustration also drives the paper. Matt coated stock keeps flat colour clean; uncoated warms it and kills reflections under a reading lamp.
