A brochure is folded sheets held together at the spine. Short ones are stapled. Longer ones are glued or wire-bound.
Saddle stitching is the simplest and the cheapest. It also opens completely flat, so an image can run across a spread without a gutter breaking it.
Past roughly sixty pages the staples stop holding. Perfect binding or wire-o takes over, and the piece starts to behave like a catalogue.
