A photo book is judged on two things: how the paper renders the image, and whether a spread can cross the gutter without losing its middle.
Sewn sections open further than glued ones, which is why photographic and art editions are almost always sewn. An open or Swiss spine goes further still and leaves the block visible.
Heavier coated stock, 150 gsm and up, stops the image showing through from the reverse.
