Custom leather-bound books, made by hand

Leather, gold, amber and hand-painted edges. PIMAX binds books one at a time — special editions, Bibles, chronicles and gifts — and booksandcatalogues.com brings that work to clients across Europe.

Hand bookbinding from Poland

An artistic bindery, now working across Europe

PIMAX is an artistic bindery in Koszalin, near the Baltic coast of Poland. For more than twenty years it has made leather-bound books entirely by hand: sewing the book block, covering the boards in vegetable-tanned leather, tooling ornaments in gold and finishing each copy with painted edges, metal fittings or stones set in silver.

Every binding is made to order, from a single personalised copy to a limited run for a publisher. As PIMAX’s authorised representative in Europe, booksandcatalogues.com handles the whole commission for you — brief, quote in EUR, proofs, production and delivery — in English, German or French. If you also need the book printed, we print the block in one of our partner printing houses and PIMAX binds it.

Anatomy of a binding

Six crafts in one book

Leather Bible with amber, turquoise and hand-painted edges beside its matching slipcase – PIMAX
1
Leather
Vegetable-tanned Italian leather is pared thin at the edges and worked over the boards by hand, so corners and spine stay crisp for decades.
2
Gold tooling
Frames, ornaments and lettering are pressed in with heated brass tools and gold leaf — the oldest way to decorate a binding.
3
Amber in silver
Baltic amber is set in a silver bezel and fixed into the cover. It is the jeweller's part of the job, done in the same workshop.
4
Turquoise & pearls
Smaller stones mark the corners of the frame. Their colour is chosen to echo the painted edge.
5
Painted edges
The fore-edge and head are painted by hand — here a Madonna on the side and flowers along the top — and protected with a fine finish.
6
Slipcase
A case covered in matching leather, built to the millimetre, protects the book on the shelf and in transit.

Bookbinding techniques

Fore-edge painting, gold tooling and gilding

Sacred Heart hand-painted across the fore-edge of a leather Bible – PIMAX

Fore-edge painting

A picture painted across the edges of the pages, visible when the book is closed. PIMAX paints portraits, landscapes and ornaments by hand, matching the subject of the book — a Sacred Heart for a Bible, a battle scene for a fantasy rulebook, roses for a gift. Edges can also be gilded or coloured.

Gold-tooled moons and stars on a black leather spine – PIMAX

Gold tooling

Lettering, frames and ornaments are pressed into the leather with heated hand tools and gold leaf. Blind tooling (without gold) and relief embossing add depth. This is how names, dates, monograms and logos are added to a cover.

Hand-gilded icon, metal corner and rose-painted edges on a leather book – PIMAX

Gilding, metal & stones

Icons gilded by hand, brass or silver corners, clasps and straps, Baltic amber and turquoise set in silver bezels. These jewellery techniques turn a binding into a one-of-a-kind object — and protect it for generations of use.

Painting on leather

The cover becomes the canvas

Besides tooling and gilding, PIMAX paints directly on leather. A mountain range wraps around a family chronicle, peonies spread across a diary, branches rise in relief on a book of nature stories. Painted covers suit wedding books, chronicles and personal gifts, and can repeat a motif from your logo, coat of arms or illustrations.
